If you have the issue of breaking out after wearing makeup even though you washed your face, you might want to try this out! Double cleansing is basically how it sounds. Using micellar water or an oil based cleanser to remove makeup first will help break down all the product from your skin. Then, using a normal skin cleanser will aid in deep cleaning and removing dirt and extra makeup that it left over. This will ensure that all makeup, dirt and oil is removed from the skin and you’re 100% cleansed. Then follow up with your normal skin products like serum and moisturizer.
Summer Skin Care Tips
- SUNSCREEN: Protecting your skin from the UVA and UVB rays from the sun is so important! Your skin will thank you in 20 years.
- No need for the heavy, thick creams: Thick moisturizers are ideal for winter time when your skin really needs the extra moisture. Keep it light for the warmer months.
- Stay Hydrated: Of course, this goes for all year round but especially when you’re sweating in the 90 degree weather. Replenishing your body is key for firm skin!
- Exfoliate: This also can go for all year round but keeping your skin free of dead skin cells and debris will help with congestion and clogged pores. Resulting in less skin issues.
- Don’t forget the lips!: Lips always seem to be overlooked when it comes to skin care. Lips can be sunburned just like any other part of you body. Try getting a lip balm that contains SPF and keep your look smooth!
Aloe Vera for the Face
- moisturizes and heals dry skin: This is pretty self explanatory. aloe has hydrating properties and the skin loves it. its great for oily and acne prone skin.
- soothes irritates skin: Aloe vera is known for helping sun burns. it can also help with itchiness, redness, rash, etc. It makes a great ingredient for sensitive skin. While also having antifulgal properties, it can handle heat boils and cysts.
- Helps with Aging: As your skin ages, it loses its elasticity and fines lines form. Aloe Vera can help you deal with those aging signs. Not only does it reduce wrinkles and fine lines, but prevents premature aging and elasticity.
- Fights Acne and fades blemishes: Mentioning antibacterial properties again. It helps the build up of bacteria, which is the main reason for acne and blemishes. Put a small amount on the blemish and you can get rid of that spot in no time.
- REMOVES DARK CIRCLES AND PUFFINESS: Aloe Vera is packed with antioxidant and vitamin E which helps lighten discoloration around the eyes and the cooling feel helps with puffiness.
DIY ingredients to never put on the skin
- Baking Soda to Exfoliate: Baking soda is not only too harsh for the skin, its pH levels are very damaging. A neutral pH would be 7, anything above that is alkaline and anything below is acidic. Your skins pH is usually around 5.5, meaning acidic. Using products with higher than 5 levels can break down your skins defense layer. Baking soda has a pH of about 9, which is not good for the skin.
- Toothpaste on Pimples: You always see people use toothpaste as a skin care hack. Toothpaste dries out your pimples, with indeed does make them appear smaller. Of course, something that isn’t formulated to be on your face, should never be on your face. Toothpaste is for your teeth!!! Once again, toothpaste can offset your pH levels.
- Lemon Juice or Citrus for Brightening: Again, PH LEVELS! Citrus is way too acidic for the face. The raw juice can also make your skin sensitive to the sun. Citrus is only okay when it is in a skin care formulated for the face, the product has the right about of extract to be safe.
Sebaceous Filaments vs blackheads
So everyone knows about those tiny black dots that mostly occur around the nose or on the chin, those are blackheads. Sebaceous filaments are a yellowish color. They are both a collection or sebum and dead skin cells, they are naturally occurring and most prominent around the nose. Bad news, you can never get rid of them. You can extract them but they will eventually come back. Irritating or exposing them to oxygen turns those filaments into the tiny black dots you see. So doing those blackhead strips might help but they actually do more bad than good, believe it or not. By removing the guck and such with a pore strip can actually make your pores bigger. Using a good chemical exfoliant can help with your pores. Using a BHA exfoliant can help with those pesky black dots. Also, of course, be gentle with your skin care based on your skin type. Try to not use harsh chemicals and don’t be rough with your skin. A big thing is to not pick at your skin!!
Products That Will Age Your Skin!
It seems to have become a trend to use anti-aging product in the skin care routine. I am only 19 years old BUT I still do everything I can to keep my skin young. I don’t specifically use products that are labeled “anti-aging” but I do try to take care of my skin to keep it from aging.
One thing no one thinks about that is in your skin care products is ALCOHOL. Alcohol is one thing that I look for in the ingredients list when I buy or use any product that I put on my face. SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol are types of alcohol that, in the long run, will have negative effect on the skin. On the other hand, fatty alcohol is beneficial for the skin. I always try to use alcohol free products because honestly, it’s kind of scary when I see that a product contains alcohol. I always try to steer clear of products containing alcohol. Seeing a product that says, “alcohol-free,” is good sign!
Is Witch Hazel Actually Beneficial?

Witch Hazel can be known as a great toner for the skin, but is it actually doing good things for the skin? Witch Hazel contains antioxidants that are beneficial but there is one main antioxidant called tannins. Tannins can constrict and dry out the skin. If you have acne and use witch hazel, it can actually make your skin worse. It’s an “astringent” product and can dry up the acne. Drying up the acne with an astringent can irritate the skin, resulting in worse skin problems. Using witch hazel for oily skin can seem tempting since it will dry it up. In reality it will dry up your skin because of the tannin and alcohol content. in the end witch hazel can do more damage than you think. Finding a toner that doesn’t contain witch hazel and/alcohol will be better for your skin in the long run.
3 Things I Will Never Do Again
- Using coconut oil on my face: Coconut oil has this reputation that its an amazing, cheap and natural product and it does wonders. FALSE! Coconut oil is a comedogenic, which means it can and probably will clog your pores. Using it on the body is a lot better altervative.
- Using physical exfoliators: when I say physical I mean those walnut, coffee or sugar scrubs to get rid of dead skin on your face. Using exfoliators that contain granolas like coffee or nut grounds can really tear up the skin. You may not see it but it will. When you use a scrub that doesn’t dissolve you can easily over exfoliate your skin and do some damage. Using chemical peels, such as The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% peeling solution is a way better alternative and It only costs $7.20. The solution only exfoliates the top most layer of you skin and will help with clearing your pores!
- Use makeup wipes: You may think makeup wipes are totally fine and get rid of all your makeup, and I’m sad to tell you that’s probably wrong. Makeup wipes honestly don’t work as well as they should, making you have to really scrub and be aggressive with your skin. For a better alternative, use micellar water with a cotton pad. Micellar water is gentle and really works to dissolve and remove makeup and dirt. When you are removing makeup, ALWAYS do a double cleanse. This means take your makeup off with a remover and then use an actual skin cleanser to really get into the pores. Using just a wipe or micellar water wont 100% cleanse the skin, but using face wash can ensure that you removes all the makeup and dirt!
Red Light Therapy
This month I started a new job at a tanning salon that also does other things like lipomassage, Microdermabrasion, weightless, etc. I was super excited to find out that they had red light therapy. If you’re not familiar with red light therapy its basically a red medical-grade LED light being shown directly into your skin, this light produces chemicals in your cells to boost production and regeneration, it works with your overall body. Red light therapy can be used at home with a light mask you can find on amazon or some tanning salons, like the one I work at, provide this treatment. You can lay in the bed for up to 15 minutes at a time, its so relaxing,
There are so many benefits to this therapy such as hair growth, increasing circulation, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and facial texture, increases collagen in the skin, improves acne, wound healing and soo much more. If I were to list all the benefits my this post would be way too long. Ever since I started using red light therapy I have noticed that my skin just looks better. My skin tone seems to have evened out some and my complexion just looks smoother and even.
This treatment is safe and definitely painless. The one I have access to looks just like a tanning bed but without the UV lights than make you tan. The only reports of some sort of harm or pain was from going too long and burning or burning from faulty wires or device corrosion. When using any sort of tanning/ light therapy bed, make sure your going to professionals or a tanning salon that can be trusted and has a good reputation!
